How Much Does Luxury Cost?

Jake Plummer’s Denver luxury home located at 6 Sunrise Drive in Englewood / Cherry Hills is currently listed for just over $2.7 million, after a recent $200,000 price drop. It’s been on the market for almost 9 months now with no takers. Plummer bought the home for $2.7 million, so he clearly just wants to break even on the deal. If you can afford a $10,000/month mortgage, then perhaps YOU could own this piece of Denver luxury real estate.

Cliff May is known as “the father of the California ranch home.” He was one of the premier designers in the 1930s in Los Angeles and San Diego who wanted to achieve modular home designs that were “built for the seclusion and comfort of… families, for the enjoyment of relaxation in their homes.” His modern homes were livable spaces that achieved so much more than just looking good from the outside. Cliff May homes were built out — not up — and featured wide open spaces where families could gather. Now these designs have come to a South Denver neighborhood, where modernism thrives.

Atom Stevens heard a rumor that there was a place called Harvey Park, Denver where he could find Cliff May homes for sale. At first he was skeptical, until he rummaged through library archives and found the actual newspaper ads from the 1950s. “You’re never really sure until you can find proof,” he explained. Now that he’s stumbled upon his treasure, he made it his mission to get the word out about the 170 modern homes of Harvey Park, Denver on his site, www.HarveyParkModern.com.

Many people see the Cliff May homes as an affordable alternative to more expensive modern homes in Arapahoe Acres, Krisiana Park and Lynwood. Harvey Park homes designed by Cliff May range from the mid to upper $100,000s, with one recently selling for as much as $215,000. The single-story modular homes feature pitched roofs, open floor plans, floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed posts and beams and outdoor courtyards. Sizes range from 900 to 1,300 square feet, although they feel larger due to the high ceilings.

According to resident Graeme Nistler, a former 9News traffic reporter, the tall windows facing the courtyard “gives you a sense that you’re not just living in a box: you’re living outside as well.” One downside of modular homes is that they generally do not retain heat as well as other Colorado modern houses.

Resident Gracie Stean, winner of the Miss Modernism Pageant, says that the Harvey Park homes are located in “an undiscovered part of town.” For whatever reason, the Cliff May development — bordered by Lowell Boulevard, Osceola Street, Iliff Avenue and Vassar Avenue — is overlooked by most buyers, even though it’s conveniently situated near the public and private lakes of Bear Creek Trail, shopping in Littleton, and Federal Boulevard restaurants.  ”I wouldn’t think about living anywhere else in Denver,” Stean adds.

Although a life in the limelight isn’t exactly what some people desire, you can’t deny that it does come with its perks. Often times these celebrities that have to deal with constant hassle from the paparazzi also have some of the nicest places to escape from it all in. Real estate agents to the rich and famous can often make enough off of a single commission to live on for the entire year with some of the amazing properties that are being bought and sold by all of these celebrities. Some even have multiple properties with their vacation or guest house being more amazing than some of the dream homes that people use as their main living space. When these properties do sell they usually gain a lot of attention like the house we will view today, Jerry Seinfeld’s Colorado Home.

This secluded ranch-style house includes a guest house and sits on 26 acres with excellent views of Sunshine Mountain and Wilson Peak. There are a total of 11 bedrooms along with 12 bathrooms and one half bathroom to boot. If all that wasn’t enough to get the average person excited, the house recently underwent a half a million dollar renovation, more than the cost of a nice home in some areas of the country. There is a large eat-in kitchen, an oversized deck that looks out over a trail system that leads down to a creek and a full gym with treadmills and other equipment for staying in shape.

One of the really cool things about being involved in the real estate business is that you often get the first bits of news about all of the goings on with celebrity homes. Often the homes owned by these celebrities are extremely extravagant and something that the average person could never in their lives imagine living in. Another cool part is that most celebrities are always moving around, never wanting to stay for too long in a certain place so we are constantly getting news of new celebrity homes being bought and sold. The latest one that we have received word is the home of Kelsey Grammer and his ex-wife Camille. This Bachelor Gulch ski chalet has just hit the market at $7.9 million.

The house which is a three story ski in and out is located on Beaver Creek Mountain and measures in at 8,230 square feet with six bedrooms and seven and a half bathrooms. The originals asking price for the house was $9.5 million. The couple that have been married for 13 years now will be splitting which is the reason for the sale of the house. Camille, who is 43 and was a part of the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” cast on Bravo is reported to have been divorced by Kelsey so that he can marry his 29 year old British flight attendant girlfriend, Kayte Walsh. Whatever the reason may be, the house is up on the open market now and sounds like a great place.
